VELscope – Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer is the 13th most common cancer in Canada. The VELscope® oral cancer screening assessment system examines the mouth and screens for abnormal tissue. Early detection is the best way to enable treatment success and increase survival rate.
It helps to detect the following:
- Viral, fungal and bacterial infections
- Inflammation from a variety of sources
- Squamous papillomas
- Salivary gland tumors
- Cancer and pre-cancer
This technology changes the way oral mucosal examinations take place. The handheld device emits a harmless light which is used to inspect the mouth.
New research shows that risk factors for oral cancer include the Human Papilloma Virus, in addition to tobacco use, frequent and/or excessive alcohol consumption, a compromised immune system, and past history of cancer. This change presents an unprecedented call to action for oral cancer awareness and regular screenings.
